6th Annual Local Filmmaker’s Night

A selection of films made by local Cleveland talent. $3 admission for the entire night.

The Struggle For Existence
Director: Michael Suglio (57 min.)

The Struggle For Existence is a feature-length documentary film that examines two museums—the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the newly founded Creation Museum in Cincinnati—and their very different approaches to science. Through a survey of museum exhibits and exclusive interviews with staff members, the film explores both the scientific method as well as biblically based creation science and shows how the museums’ respective methodologies affect the conclusions they reach on numerous subjects, including dinosaurs, evolution, and the age of the Earth.

Trails End
Director: Jeffrey James (8 min.)

It’s the fall of 1886. A man travels the Ohio countryside to track a notorious outlaw that destroyed his life and the lives of countless others. His journey leads him down many trails including one into a troubled past.

Starchy and Flump: Close Encounters with Death
Directors: Ray F. Tomorowitz and Jim Masar (29 min.)

Filmed in the mid-1970s in a Super-8 with sound format, the movie Starchy and Flump: Close Encounters with Death satirizes two pop culture icons of that era—the television, Starsky & Hutch, and the Steven Spielberg film classic, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Written, directed and produced by amateur film makers, Ray Tomorowitz and Jim Masar, Starchy and Flump places a couple of bumbling street-wise, big-city detectives at the center of man's historic first encounter with an extraterrestrial being. And the twists and turns of the plot keep the laughs coming—right up to the climactic meeting between detective Flumpinson and an alien “Space Scout” on a special mission to earth. Filmed over a 12-month period on locations in Cleveland, Geneva and Ashtabula, OH, Starchy and Flump has become something of a cult classic among older amateur film makers in the Cleveland area.

PolyCultures
Director: David Pearl (56 min.)

PolyCultures: Food Where We Live is a documentary program showing the diverse communities around Greater Cleveland coming together to grow a more sustainable and equitable food system. PolyCultures is firmly rooted in the ideas that producing food for local consumption is good for the health of individuals and communities, as well as the local economy and the ecosystem. To balance the advocacy perspective, it features many national and international experts who place area food production in the bigger picture of sustainability. The aesthetic is a mix of “agrarian” camera techniques portraying post-industrial Cleveland and surrounding farmland, symbolizing the ground-level nature of this movement.

Ichigo
Director: Michael Suglio (30 min.)

Ichigo (Andrew “Fin” Coe) is about a CWRU senior, who the film is named after, who desperately wants to find a date to homecoming. When an unlikely guest named Ashley (Alisa Cullison) enters Ichigo’s world of anime and DDR, Ichigo and Ashley’s world change.

Jean Claude the Gumming Zombie
Director: Johnny Wu (34 min.)

When a toothless Frenchman finds himself the latest victim of a zombie plague, he is befriended by an overly-wholesome family that belongs more in a 1950s sitcom than the world of today. Half pet, half best friend for young Timmy, and all dead, Jean Claude proves that you don’t have to have brains to eat them. Or something.
