This animated Japanese film is based on the 1949 Magna comic book by Tezuka Osamu. In the futuristic city of Metropolis, a struggle between the robots and the human population of the city, who once coexisted peacefully, has now exploded into a violent revolution. An investigation conducted by private detective, Shunsaku Ban, and his nephew, Kenichi, leads to an outlaw scientist named Dr. Laughton. The scientist was hired by the ruler of Metropolis, Duke Red, to create a superhuman robot-girl, Tima, to succeed him as the next ruler of Metropolis. However, Duke Reds jealous bastard son, the Rock of Marduk, cannot stand the idea of a robot taking the throne and he sets out to destroy Tima. What ensues is a frantic race as Kenichi and Tima flee the Rock through the underground tunnels, dilapidated alleys, and skyscraping towers (the Ziggurat) of Metropolis, aided by a nurturing trash-collecting robot, Fifi.

An attorney (Ben Affleck) in a rush to make a court appointment to file legal papers involving a multi-million dollar trust accidentally collides with an alcoholic insurance salesman (Samuel Jackson), who also is a rush for a court appointment involving the custody of his children. The attorney leaves the scene of the accident and strands the salesman, causing him to miss his custody hearing. During the process of the post-crash discussion, the attorney accidentally drops the papers he needs to present in court. The judge gives him until the end of the day to present the papers and thus begins a cat and mouse game between the proponents.

While some modern thrillers are called Hitchcock-esque, this one actually deserves the comparison. Besides keeping audiences on their edge of their seats, this film even includes a good guy fending off a bad guy with a tool unique to them (a la the flashbulbs in Rear Window). Jodie Foster stars as a divorced mom who moves into a swank New York City home with an added feature not listed in the real estate ad a panic room where one could seek shelter in an emergency. That emergency happens when three desperate crooks break into what they thought would be an empty house, at which point their simple burglary spirals into chaos. Most-likely film to keep you on the edge of your seat this semester.

Director Stanley Kubrick delivers a harsh critique on human nature in this unflinching look at the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War. At boot camp in the States, punishing drill instructor Sgt. Hartman (R. Lee Ermey) turns raw, naive recruits into unflinching killing machines; he even gives them insulting, dehumanizing names like Joker (Matthew Modine), Cowboy (Arliss Howard), and Gomer Pyle (D'Onofrio). The film then follows Pvt. Joker to Vietnam and the turning point of the war, the disastrous 1968 Tet Offensive, during which it became painfully clear that the Americans good war mindset from WW2 could no longer succeed, and despite the brutality of their training, these Marines were inadequately prepared for their enemys tactics. Kubrick does not take sides (like John Waynes' The Green Berets); instead, he shows you the events and lets you make up your own mind.
