Rated PG-13 (121 min.) Director: Sam Raimi

One of the best-ever translations of a comic book into a movie! Tormented high-school geek Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire), an orphan who lives with his Aunt Mae (Rosemary Harris) and Uncle Ben (Cliff Robertson) is transformed into a web-slinging superhero after being bitten by a genetically-engineered spider. Should he use his new-found powers to win (at last!) the attention of his childhood sweetheart, Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst), even though it would double-cross his best friend, Harry Osborn (James Franco)? Or should he heed Uncle Ben's injunction that "with great power comes great responsibility"? When Harry's father, crazed industrialist Norman Osborn (Willem Dafoe), goes on a high-tech crime spree as supervillain The Green Goblin, Peter must choose...and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man swings into action! While theres plenty of action and special effects, ultimately its the characters who make this film so satisfying. Maguire simply *is* Peter Parker. A superb adaptation of the original comic by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Stay for the surprise song at the end of the credits!

Panic Room (2002)
Rated R (112 min.) Director: David Fincher
With Jodie Foster, Kristen Stewart, Forest Whitaker
Read more about it at the IMDB

While some modern thrillers are called Hitchcock-esque, this one actually deserves the comparison. Besides keeping audiences on their edge of their seats, this film even includes a good guy fending off a bad guy with a tool unique to them (a la the flashbulbs in Rear Window). Jodie Foster stars as a divorced mom who moves into a swank New York City home with an added feature not listed in the real estate ad a panic room where one could seek shelter in an emergency. That emergency happens when three desperate crooks break into what they thought would be an empty house, at which point their simple burglary spirals into chaos. Most-likely film to keep you on the edge of your seat this semester.

Saturday, September 14, 2002 7:00pm, 9:30pm
Full Metal Jacket (1987)
Rated R (116 min.) Director: Stanley Kubrick
With Matthew Modine, R. Lee Ermey, Vincent D'Onofrio
Read more about it at the IMDB

Director Stanley Kubrick delivers a harsh critique on human nature in this unflinching look at the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War. At boot camp in the States, punishing drill instructor Sgt. Hartman (R. Lee Ermey) turns raw, naive recruits into unflinching killing machines; he even gives them insulting, dehumanizing names like Joker (Matthew Modine), Cowboy (Arliss Howard), and Gomer Pyle (D'Onofrio). The film then follows Pvt. Joker to Vietnam and the turning point of the war, the disastrous 1968 Tet Offensive, during which it became painfully clear that the Americans good war mindset from WW2 could no longer succeed, and despite the brutality of their training, these Marines were inadequately prepared for their enemys tactics. Kubrick does not take sides (like John Waynes' The Green Berets); instead, he shows you the events and lets you make up your own mind.
